ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS
FOR EVERY NEW PATIENT
Dr. Molina makes sure your mouth is cancer-free. He does this using a state-of-the-art device called a VELscope. As a board-certified periodontist, Dr. Molina has special training in oral tissue. This makes him an ideal choice for your cancer screening.
Each new patient receives an oral cancer screening as part of their new patient exam. If Dr. Molina suspects something, he can do a biopsy. If you have a concern about something in your mouth, please book an appointment, and Dr. Molina will check it out.
How the
VELscope Works
Dr. Molina uses the VELscope, a handheld device that shines blue light into your mouth. Healthy mouth tissue glows in the light.
When tissue is abnormal, though, the VELscope’s light reflects back as dark or irregular patches. This could be due to:
Evaluation of
Lesions and Biopsies
Dr. Molina evaluates areas in the mouth that seem abnormal, such as lesions that do not heal or unusual tissue color and texture and assesses if they need further investigation, monitoring or a biopsy.
If a biopsy is indicated, Dr. Molina uses his surgical microscope to precisely remove a small tissue sample and sends it to the University of Florida’s oral pathology department. We then bring the patient back, review the report with them, and provide any recommendations.
