Gummy Smiles

Treatment

A gummy smile is when too much gum shows when you smile, making your teeth look short or out of proportion. In most cases, the teeth are actually normal in length—they just appear shorter because extra gum tissue covers them. This can make the smile look unbalanced or overly “gummy.”

In other cases, the teeth may truly be shorter due to wear, genetics or delayed development. Either way, the gums and teeth appear out of proportion, affecting the overall look of your smile.

Using

Crown Lengthening

To correct a gummy smile, Dr. Molina uses a procedure called “crown lengthening”, which exposes more of your tooth. He gently removes excess gum tissue and, if needed, reshapes the bone around the tooth to ensure the gums don’t grow back to where they were. If this is needed, he carefully adjusts the bone to make room for your gums to stay in their new, higher position—giving you an attractive smile that lasts.

Uneven Gumline

Dr. Molina can perform a gum contouring procedure to create a more even, balanced smile. His process depends on what he finds under your gum. If only gum tissue is in the way, he simply trims away the extra gum tissue to align with adjacent teeth.

But if the bone is too close to the edge of your tooth, he gently opens up the gum and reshapes the bone to create enough healthy space. This allows him to move the gum so it is level with the neighboring teeth.

Clinical

Crown Lengthening

In addition to fixing a gummy smile, crown lengthening is used to create more space for a crown or filling.

By reshaping the gum and bone, Dr. Molina ensures there’s enough tooth structure available for your dentist to place a crown or fill a cavity and properly seal the edges, which prevents bacteria from entering and causing gum inflammation.

Recession

Gum recession is when gum tissue pulls away or shrinks back from your tooth, exposing the tooth root. This can be unsightly and, over time, cause tooth sensitivity and tooth loss. Dr. Molina performs gum grafting to increase the gum tissue around your teeth, eliminating sensitivity, helping prevent tooth loss, and returning your smile to normal.
